Car Insurance in Curaçao: Coverage Explained
Before you drive a car off the lot, it needs to be insured. This guide explains the coverages you'll come across on Curaçao and how to think about which one fits your car.
Third-party liability (WA) is mandatory
Third-party liability insurance, known as WA (wettelijke aansprakelijkheid), is required by law. It covers the damage you cause to others with your car. Driving without it is not an option, so arrange it before you take the car on the road.
WA versus comprehensive (full casco)
- WA: Covers damage you cause to others. Damage to your own car is not covered.
- WA + limited casco: Adds cover for certain defined risks to your own car, such as fire, theft and window damage.
- Full casco (comprehensive): The broadest cover, also paying for damage to your own car in many situations where you are at fault.
How to choose based on the car's value and age
A common approach: the more the car is worth to you, the more cover makes sense. For an older, low-value car, WA alone is often enough because repairing or replacing it may cost less than the extra premium. For a newer or more valuable car, limited or full casco is usually worth considering. Weigh the annual premium against what you'd pay out of pocket after an incident.
What to arrange before driving
- Get a quote from one or more insurers and compare the cover, not just the price.
- Make sure the policy is active before you pick up the car.
- Check what's excluded and what deductible (eigen risico) applies.
- Keep proof of insurance in the car.
